'I think everyone deserves a home,' said Rameau, who said he takes no money from his work with the homeless. 'Homeless people across the country are squatting in empty homes. The question is: Is this going to be done out of desperation or with direction?'"

The Path From Charity to Profit - NYTimes.com

The Path From Charity to Profit - NYTimes.com: "Kedai Balitaku, which usually goes by the name KeBal, aims to become a chain of street carts selling low-priced healthy food to children.

KeBal is a social business — one that exists primarily to achieve a social goal. It’s easy to see why the social businesses model has become a popular strategy for attacking the problems of the poor. The impulse to create a business rather than employ traditional nonprofit work comes partly out of the notion — right or wrong — that charity creates dependency and that without the discipline of the market it often doesn’t work."

Social businesses fall roughly into two different categories. Some try to employ people who wouldn’t otherwise have jobs: for example, fair trade groups that buy crafts from indigenous women to sell in wealthy countries. Others provide goods or services to people who otherwise can’t afford them

“There’s always the dichotomy,” said Muench. “You’re thinking about profits and sustainability, and you’re thinking about the humanitarian issues. It can become an internal battle. We’re always inclined to shift back into humanitarian need but have to remember that to be sustainable you have to have a hard business mentality.”

Child abuse tests how the church relates to the secular world | Catherine Pepinster | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk: "And a major reason for that is that we have all bought into the problem: we have accepted the view that priests are different, that they are in an elevated position from the rest of us, that they are somehow holier. And if they are holier, they are above the usual human frailties. Too many of us assumed that priests would not be capable of such actions, that they should be treated specially and differently from anybody else accused of heinous crimes."

Invitation to a Party and a Campaign- Jan 15, 2011 « PEOPLE PROJECT

Invitation to a Party and a Campaign- Jan 15, 2011 « PEOPLE PROJECT: "a local Poor People’s Campaign to draw poor people together under a common banner. King’s “one in six” in poverty has increased to “one in five” and will soon be “one in four.”
At the beginning of winter, the Campaign had a second – “Vee Vant to Zee Yur Paperz” – protest on the day after the police “swept” Garberville and Redway. The police practiced crude profiling, stopping and questioning local poor people as suspected “transients.” Incredibly, some were asked to show papers to prove they were local.

From law enforcement’s vantage point, it was all jolly fun: a self-styled TEA Party. This “Transient Enforcement Action” included our recently elected Sheriff who strode Garberville’s main street flanked by several armed minions. “Transient Enforcement” meanwhile suggested a Building Code parallel where poor persons go out of compliance with – the what? – the Dollar Code? - if they are homeless. Individuals are then ticketed or arrested as appropriate

Unfortunately this kind of profiling is not appropriate for American people! One of the projects of the local Poor People’s Campaign is the formation of a Nomads Union to spread the word that poor people have civil rights. The Nomad’s Union hopes to go on to support people who assert these rights. As King was aware, if it was okay for Black people to have civil rights, it was okay for poor people in general to have them. Not an insurrection, but in King’s spirit, a resurrection. You don’t have to be poor to sign up, just one of the people.."

Sacramento Homeless Take City To Court Over Seizure Of Possessions

Sacramento Homeless Take City To Court Over Seizure Of Possessions: "The rare case highlights the often untold struggles of homeless Americans attempting to create makeshift homes for themselves in a climate where law enforcement policies target them and their rights are ambiguous.

The civil class action lawsuit brought before federal court represents all homeless people in Sacramento whose possessions were taken in police sweeps since 2005, The Sacramento Bee reports. The period of time includes the highly publicized closure of the 'Tent City' homeless encampment.

Approximately 20 people are expected to testify, but the case touches many more. So far, over 60 homeless men and women have filed depositions and the case could end up including 2,000 plaintiffs total, KCRA reports."

the1500 | coming soon to a doorway near you

Sell the house. Sell the car. Sell the kids because for 750 lucky couples there ain't gonna be no comin' home in a few days. And those days are painful. It's like awaiting an execution. There will be a death watch and the whole nine yards. It has to be because it has to be all nice and legal. Great country, huh? We learned it under Reagan, compassion fatigue.

Claiming the Right to the City | Urban Habitat

Claiming the Right to the City | Urban Habitat: "Land Ownership
The right to permanent public ownership of urban territories for public use."

All of the groups that assembled are facing huge pressures of displacement and gentrification of their communities. We explored the ways that neo-liberalism and the privatization of land use have turned our cities over to developers. We discussed how we’re fighting struggles for housing, use of traditional space, and against predatory development. We discovered how putting forward a proactive and simple assertion of our rights made a huge difference in how we understood our ongoing work. And we quickly recognized that so many of the issues we’re fighting for in our cities: housing, transportation, education, LGBT rights to space, and rights of culture, are inextricably interrelated. We just need a common way to talk about it, strategize, and develop our power in common terms. Toward that end, the Right to the City Alliance was initiated so that we can build local power toward a national agenda for our cities. So that, one day, we can build enough power to stand with our brothers and sisters in the global South and demand global justice for humanity.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Dymphna

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Dymphna
From time immemorial, the saint was invoked as patroness against insanity. The Bollandists have published numerous accounts of miraculous cures, especially between 1604 and 1668. As a result, there has long been a colony for lunatics at Gheel; even now there are sometimes as many as fifteen hundred whose relatives invoke St. Dymphna for their cure. The insane are treated in a peculiar manner; it is only in the beginning that they are placed in an institution for observation; later they are given shelter in the homes of the inhabitants, take part in their agricultural labours, and are treated very kindly. They are watched without being conscious of it. The treatment produces good results. The old church of St. Dymphna in Gheel was destroyed by fire in 1489. The new church was consecrated in 1532 and is still standing. Every year on the feast of the saint and on the Tuesday after Pentecost numerous pilgrims visit her shrine. In Gheel there is also a fraternity under her name

Dymphna - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dymphna - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saint Dymphna (also: Dympna, Dimpna) was the daughter of a pagan Irish chief and his Christian wife in the 7th century. She was murdered by her father. The story of St. Dymphna has been preserved in a thirteenth century life written by a canon of the Church of St. Aubert at Cambrai
Dymphna was born in Ireland sometime in the 600s. Her father, Damon, a petty king of Oriel, was pagan but her mother was a devout Christian. When Dymphna was fourteen her mother died. After the death of his wife, Damon wanted to remarry and insisted that his new wife should look like Dymphna's mother. When no such woman could be found Damon began to desire to marry Dymphna, because of the strong resemblance she bore to her mother. When Dymphna learned of her father's intentions she fled his court along with her confessor Father Gerebernus and two servants. Together they sailed towards the continent, eventually landing in Belgium, where they took refuge in the town of Gheel. When Damon discovered their hiding place he set out to recover his daughter. He ordered that Father Gerebernus be killed and tried to persuade Dymphna to return with him, but she refused. Enraged, Damon decapitated his daughter on the spot.
she is the patron saint of those who suffer from mental illnesses and neurological disorders, mental health professionals, incest victims, and runaways.
